会社でも学校でも家庭でも、上が愚かだとマトモな人はみじめだ。

この小説を、一応は最後まで読んだ。途中で、かなり退屈だと感じた部分も多かった。
でもそれは、単に僕の英語力や（語学力とは関係のない）読解力の不足によって、
実は面白いものが僕にとっては面白くなく感じられたに過ぎないのだろうと思う。
面白い部分もたくさんあった。

Charles Dickens の作品としては、僕はまだ David Copperfield, Bleak House,
Great Expectations, Oliver Twist しか読んでいない。
僕は最近、Thomas Hardy の主要な長編小説を6本、続けて読んだのだけど、
それと比べると、Charles Dickens は、poetical な部分が弱い。Hardy の方が
はるかに poetical だと思う。ただ、Dickens の方がはるかに plot が面白いと
思う。

ここら辺が、Dickens を娯楽小説家だと感じる人がいるゆえんだろうか。
娯楽小説（大衆小説）の本質は、プロットの面白さにあるだろう。プロットが面白くなければ、
つまり、次から次へと珍しい（あっと驚く）出来事が矢継ぎ早に出てこなければ、
大衆小説としては失敗なのだろう。その点で、Dickens は素晴らしいのだろう。
そして、物語がゆっくりとしか展開しないけど、文章そのものに格調の高さを感じさせる
Thomas Hardy は、大衆小説にはなりにくいのかな？

年老いた父親への温かい眼差しと職業人としてベストを尽くす姿勢。

and his mouth tightened into a post-office again.
ちょっと変わり者かもしれないが、優しく誠実な人である。

執念というか妄執の産物という意味でピップとエステラは同型。

ジャガーズにミス・ハヴィシャムは全く関係のないことを確認。

ここでちょっと恩着せがましい内心をチラ見せするのは微妙な所作だ。
Poor fellow! He little suspected with whose money.
そりゃそうだろうが、ハーバートに落ち度はないと思う。

“Low”であることの苛烈さ。
これは最近の日本でもじわじわと理解されやすいものになっている。
つまりはNo chanceということ。
コンピソンみたいなブラック企業家に使い捨てされるわけだ。
悲しかな、“戦後”という時空はゲームオーヴァーになり、
久しぶりに？Class societyという黒雲が日本全土を覆っている・・・。
それはともかく、ここでの話の筋としてはハーバート・メモが重要だ。
“Young Havisham's name was Arthur. Compeyson is the man
who professed to be Miss Havisham's lover.”

Satis House への途中立ち寄ったブルーボアでドラムルと鉢合わせ。
難題を抱え天気も冴えない中、最悪の人間と同じ空気を吸う不快感。
読むふりをする故郷の古新聞は、そんなピップの有り様であり心模様だ。
Pretending to read a smeary newspaper long out of date,
which had nothing half so legible in its local news, as the foreign matter
of coffee, pickles, fish sauces, gravy, melted butter, and wine
with which it was sprinkled all over, as if it had taken the measles
in a highly irregular form...

勝手にパトロンだと思い込んでいたのはピップの責任。
ミス・ハヴィシャムはたしかに悪い人だけど仕方ない。
エステラの心と体のチグハグさ、言表に対する不信、不感、不全感が、
ピップの思いが熱いだけにより浮き彫りになっている。
When you say you love me, I know what you mean, as a form of words;
but nothing more. You address nothing in my breast,
you touch nothing there.

ウェミックから“帰宅するな！”のメッセージ。

爺さんのglances、こういうのが非常に良い。

クレラの母親はすでにない。

どうもこの小説には真正でまともな母親というのがいない。
マグウィッチはウェミックの描いた絵に納得している。
ハーバートの思い付きでボートを用意することに。
ピップは時にはハーバートを伴ったりしてボートを漕ぐ。

ウォプスル出演のシェイクスピア崩しのような妙な舞台をみる。
公演終了後、ウォプスルが待ち構えていてドキリとすることを言う。
ピップの後ろにあの時の脱獄囚のうちの一人がいた、と。
どっちの方だった？と、ピップは冷静に、用心深くたずねる。
役者が客席に見たのはやられていた方（マグウィッチじゃない方）。
とにかくコンピソンの黒い影はすぐ近くまで迫っている。
ピップはハーバートと話し合い、ウェミックに手紙で指示を仰ぐ。

そこはちゃんと状況もピップの心理状態も丁寧に処理されている。

相変わらずムカつかせてくれるクズ野郎だ。
だが世間の評判などというのはそんなものなのだ。
“It would turn a man's blood to white wine winegar to hear him tell of it, sir,”
said the landlord.

ついに僕の大好きな仕立て屋の小僧がやってくれました！
といっても単に案内役で、主力はハーバートとスタートップなのだけれど。

善悪の彼岸というよりアナーキーな、ほとんど即物的な興味本位性。
見世物としての小説の楽しさと凄味。

マグウィッチは重傷を負ったうえ逮捕される。
コンピソンはおそらく“ジャック”にストッキングをとられるのだろう。

対照的なのがウェミックのところの爺さん。
それにしてもミセス・ウェミックの堂々たるvioloncelloぶりはステキ。
イングランドのご馳走はなんといっても朝食（笑）

死刑判決→毅然とこれを受け入れる。
容体悪化→泣き言は言わない。
臨終に際し娘の健在を告げられる→ピップの手へキスし穏やかに逝く。
臨終の場面は刑務所長の人情味ある計らいによって実現したもの。

・オーリックはパンブルチュックの店に押し入り監獄暮らし。

ジョーの短い置手紙。
ビディへの思い。声と手。

パンブルチュックがムカつくのは彼が言ってることが
まるっきりの出鱈目ばかりというわけでもないからだ。
特にby hand、これはその通りだ。

ジョーとビディの結婚についてピップは全く知らされていなかった。
これをどう考えたらいいのか、考えないほうがいいのか・・・。
いずれにしろ、結婚関係はピップにはいつも急な話なのだ。

だがすべてが同じというわけではない。

知ったところでどうなるだろう。
むしろ知らないでいた方が断然いいこともある。
このさきどうなるのか、
だれにも本当のところは分からない。
みなそれぞれのexpectationsを心に抱いているにすぎないのだ。

lineをどのような比喩として考えるか。
自己の把握という点での茫漠感と読めるのかどうか、
暗示となるのかどうか。

ヴィクトリア朝のイングランドにあって、
親の後ろ盾がないこと、
“セルフ・ヘルプ”で成り上がっていくしかないという条件は、
人格的または倫理的な安定をあらかじめ喪失していることなのか。
お荷物であるという点から、すでに罪人であるという認識。
後の目標としての紳士というものの条件と内実は、
じつはひどく曖昧である。
