あと、44章で

また、132章には

と書かれていて、"most seen here at the Equator"(ここ、赤道付近ではよく見られることだが)という記述がある。
これらのことから、普通はピークオッド号が沈んだのは太平洋上赤道付近ということになっていると思うよ。
もちろん、そこに向かう前に日本沖を経由はしている。台風なんかの描写もあるしね。
だから、この場合「赤道付近」も日本沖の延長だ、というのなら、分からなくもない。
ただ、それはもうほとんど言葉の定義の問題というか、そう呼びたければ呼んでもいい、という程度の話。
作品中に、沈んだのが日本沖だ、とはどこにも書かれていない。
